Homeboy Industries provides hope, training, and support to formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated men and women, allowing them to redirect their lives and become contributing members of our community.
POSITION TITLE: Work Readiness Trainer
REPORTS TO: VP or Manager, Work Readiness Training
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work Readiness Trainer accompanies all trainees assigned to work in a Homeboy business. Peer trainers are a key component of our re-entry model and service, providing guidance and direction to clients entering at different stages of rehabilitation and development. Work Readiness Trainers, graduates of our 18-month program, provide leadership and peer mentorship to trainees currently in the program. They are instrumental in assessing client adjustments to the workplace, provide insight for relapse prevention, and intervene to provide a safe learning community for all clients. The Work Readiness Trainer is assigned to a Homeboy business and participates in the day to day operations with a special focus on the work and well-being of trainees and on trainee development through their work readiness and training experiences. The Work Readiness Trainer supports trainee development toward work readiness by accompanying them on the job and coaching them on handling the day to day requirements of a workplace.

COMPENSATION PACKAGE
$24.00 - $26.00 per hour

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Work with business manager to welcome trainee to business and clarify responsibilities and policies.
- Work side by side with trainees to model workplace behavior and support relationship with trainee.
- Build relationship with trainee to support their integration into the business and ability to work with team and supervisors.
- Maintain close communication with business manager to ensure trainee is supported and hearing a consistent message.
- Give trainees feedback on their growth and development with a focus on encouraging them to develop strength and independence.
- Work Readiness Trainer is responsible for tracking trainee attendance and completing timecards on the Payroll system (ADP).
- Assist business manager with communication with trainee as needed.
- Work Readiness Trainer does not take the place of the business supervisor. It is critical that they work together for the benefit of the trainee and that there is a good working relationship.
- Consult with and inform Case Managers and Employment Counselors frequently in order to provide coordinated support for trainee development.
- Other duties or tasks as assigned by the VP Work Readiness Training OR Manager, Work Readiness Training.
- Completed an 18 Month Program at Homeboy Industries
- Worked in a position outside of Homeboy for 3+ years
- Continues to grow as an individual and employee through trainings, recovery and therapy as an option.
- Capacity to meet people (especially trainees) where they are and see the potential for growth. Team builder; ability to connect with staff both on an individual and group level.
- Ability and willingness to encourage and challenge people to grow, see things in a new way; to support people who are being asked to do something that may stretch them. Ability to walk with and support someone as they struggle and as they experience victories.
- Capacity to hold trainees accountable, develop and empower trainees, and learn the strengths and weaknesses of trainee so as to help them to succeed.
- Mission-driven person with strong work ethic; challenge seeker and problem solver; able to act and react as necessary, even if limited information is available; not afraid to take charge of a situation; can overcome resistance and take unpopular stands when necessary.
- Ability to maintain strong professional and personal boundaries, while still providing mentorship to individuals, as needed.
- Experience working with diverse adult population with varying learning styles.
- Ability to build rapport, and to develop and maintain a safe, interactive learning environment.
- Ability to work in shared office with fast-paced environment and frequent interruptions.
- Detail oriented with excellent communication, organizational, and writing skills.
- Proficient in Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and FileMaker Pro.
